Transcripts

A title with no subtitles in the language it is spoken in can get a transcript: every line, with its time, written by your server from the audio and offered in the subtitle menu like any other track.

Early Today’s transcripts are labelled “Rough transcript”: on film dialogue the model gets about one word in five wrong in English, more in other languages. The label changes when a model is good enough.

What it does

  • Only where it’s needed. A title that already has subtitles in its audio language, embedded, beside the file, read from a disc track or fetched by a plugin, is never transcribed.
  • Listens to the dialogue. On a 5.1 track only the centre channel, where the voices are. Intros and credits are skipped.
  • Writes timed lines. They show in the subtitle menu as soon as they are written, and offline downloads carry them.
  • Names speakers it can. With Who’s on screen, a line spoken while one named person is on screen carries their name.

Turn it on

  1. Choose the model

    Server › Packs › Listening, choose Parakeet v3. It downloads once from its maker, about 640 MB.

  2. Pick when each library does it

    Server › Libraries › (a library) › Background work › Transcripts: when a title is first opened (the default), as titles are added, in the background window, or never.

Languages

Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish and Ukrainian. Audio without a language tag takes the library’s language.

Japanese, Arabic and Turkish have no model that fits a home server yet.

What it costs

About 8 CPU-minutes per hour of programme and 1 GB of memory, on one core, only while the server is otherwise idle. A machine with less than 2 GB free is not offered the model. No audio is kept and nothing leaves your server.

When a title has none

The subtitle menu says why in one line: the title already has subtitles in its language, the model doesn’t hear its language, the server lacks the memory, no model is chosen, Leyla is writing it, or it hasn’t been written yet.
