Apps and screens

Every screen asks your Leyla what it can play, and gets the film as it is whenever it can. Here’s how to put Leyla on each one.

Beta Apps not in a store yet reach beta households with their invitation, with these steps to install them.

Where it plays

Beta means it arrives while the beta runs; what’s marked Now works today.

Any browser

Open your Leyla’s address. That’s the whole install: the server serves the web app itself, so it’s always the same version as the server.

Away from home, use the address you chose in Reach it from outside.

Android phones and Android TV

One app for both. Open it and pick your Leyla from the servers it finds on your home network, or type its address. On a TV, sign in with your phone instead of typing a password with the remote.

Chromecast and Google TV

Press the cast button in the Android app or in Chrome, and choose the TV. Leyla sends the film in a form that Chromecast plays.

Signing a TV in

Roku, Kodi and the TV apps don’t ask you to type a password with a remote. They show a short code instead:

  1. Open the link page

    On your phone or computer, go to <your Leyla’s address>/link, signed in as yourself.

  2. Type the code the TV shows

    The TV signs in as you a moment later.

On a shared TV, everyone in the house then picks themselves from Who’s watching?.

LG and Samsung TVs

A small app that asks once for your server’s address, then opens the web app your Leyla serves, so the TV always runs the same version as the server. The remote’s arrows, OK, Back and media keys all work. Neither is in the LG or Samsung store yet, so each goes in through the TV’s developer mode.

LG (webOS)

  1. Turn on Dev Mode

    Install the Developer Mode app from the LG Content Store, sign in with a free LG developer account, and turn Dev Mode on. It lapses after 50 hours unless you extend it in the same app.

  2. Add the TV on a computer

    Terminal
    $ npx -p @webos-tools/cli ares-setup-device
  3. Install Leyla

    Terminal
    $ npx -p @webos-tools/cli ares-install leyla-webos-<version>.ipk

Samsung (Tizen)

A Samsung TV only installs a package signed with a certificate made for that TV, so this one takes Tizen Studio:

  1. Make the certificate

    In Tizen Studio, Certificate Manager → Samsung certificate, with the TV’s DUID.

  2. Turn on Developer mode

    On the TV, open Apps and press 1 2 3 4 5 on the remote, then enter your computer’s address.

  3. Sign and install

    Terminal
    $ tizen package -t wgt -s <your profile> -- leyla-tizen-<version>.wgt
    $ tizen install -n leyla-tizen-<version>.wgt -t <the TV>

Roku

A channel of its own: Home’s rows, a title’s seasons and episodes, subtitles, and your place saved every ten seconds. Press * on the remote to change server or sign out. Until it’s in the Channel Store, it goes in through developer mode:

  1. Turn on developer mode

    On the remote, press Home three times, Up twice, then Right, Left, Right, Left, Right. Set a developer password.

  2. Upload the channel

    Open http://<the Roku’s address> in a browser, sign in as rokudev with that password, and upload leyla-roku-<version>.zip.

  3. Sign it in

    It asks for your server’s address, then shows a code.

Kodi

Kodi 20 or later. Kodi plays the files with its own player, so most play as they are, and Leyla keeps your place every ten seconds.

  1. Allow unknown sources

    Settings → System → Add-ons → Unknown sources.

  2. Install from zip

    Add-ons → Install from zip file, and pick leyla-kodi-<version>.zip.

  3. Open it

    Leyla is under Video add-ons. It asks for your server’s address, shows a code, then lists Home’s rows. A series’ seasons are in the context menu, under “Go to the series”.
